Thu, 22 Jan 2004 17:52:12 PDT Topix RSS Feeds

G-Blog noticed that Topix is now providing RSS Feeds for searches on their site. I played with Topix last week by putting in my zipcode and I was extremely happy with the results, but didn't mention it because it wasn't RSS enabled. Now, I can get local news in my aggregator. [Via Library Stuff]

Topix is very cool!

Thu, 22 Jan 2004 17:49:16 PDT You Can Syndicate Any Boat You Row

A column from Greg Conners on using RSS and aggregators to keep up with sports news. A nice mention of Bloglines. Also, he links to the numerous feeds that Buffalo State University is providing. BTW, the title of this post comes from Dig a Pony by the Beatles, which is great timing. I just found the title for my future presentations about RSS, especially the one on personalization and customization at CIL.

Stared working with SharePointPortal again yesterday and I installed Tim Heuer's RSS Feed Reader Web Part. It's a pretty simple implementation, but it's free, and the installation worked great.

Wed, 21 Jan 2004 17:44:00 PDT 10 reasons why RSS is not ready for prime time

Dylan Greene shares his 10 reasons why RSS is not ready for prime time. While working today I listened to the RSS Winterfest, a free audio-only conference about RSS hosted by many top names in blogging. Chris Prillo, aka the Lockergnome, had a comment during the "What is the future of RSS?" session that I strongly disagree with: "RSS is good enough." I strongly disagree with this comment. While I agree RSS is good, I believe RSS is not good enough to become mainstream.

Wed, 21 Jan 2004 17:29:31 PDT One-click RSS subscriptions, continued

If this is all mumbo-jumbo to you, here's the take-away. Subscribing to a feed in a browser-based feedreader, such as Radio UserLand or Bloglines, is a no-brainer, because everything works on the click-to-load-a-page model. But it hasn't been a no-brainer to get from the orange XML icon on a web page into a GUI feedreader such as NetNewsWire or RSS Bandit. The feed: URI scheme aims to solve that problem.
